How to prepare walls for wallpaper

1. Repair Holes and Cracks in the Walls

Examine your wall closely for any imperfections such as holes, cracks, or dents. To patch these up, use a spackling compound or joint compound, depending on the size of the imperfections. For larger cracks or holes, use a wall repair kit and a drywall patch. Allow the compound to dry completely, then sand the area smooth with fine-grit sandpaper. This ensures a flat surface for the wallpaper to adhere to.

2. Smooth the Walls

It is reccomeneded to install wallpaper on walls with a level 5 finish. This will create the best results long term. Most walls are only finished to a level 4, with still contains some textural irregularities. It is possible to install wallpaper on a level 4 wall, however, some irreguarities may be visible through the wall paper as well as creating the potential for air bubbles. If this concerns you, apply a skim coat of mudding compound or plaster to even out the walls.

If your wall has any rough patches (like from old paint or texture), sand them down to create a smooth surface. For newly constructed drywall, you may need to smooth out the seams between drywall sheets using joint compound and a drywall knife. Once the surface is even and smooth, clean off the dust with a damp cloth.

3. Clean the Walls

Before you begin applying wallpaper, it’s essential to clean the wall. Any dust, grease, or grime can interfere with the adhesive, causing the wallpaper to peel or bubble over time. Use a mild detergent mixed with warm water and a sponge to wash the wall. Allow ample drying time.

4. Prime the Walls

Priming the wall is an important step, especially if you're working with new drywall, previously painted surfaces, or if you're switching from a dark-colored wall to a lighter wallpaper. A good primer will create an even base for the wallpaper, allowing it to adhere better and last longer. Choose a primer that’s compatible with the wallpaper type you’re using (there are special primers for textured or porous walls). Apply the primer evenly with a roller, and allow it to dry according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

(Important!) Freshly painted walls need to cure

It’s very important that freshly painted walls are allowed to cure for a minimum of 30 days. This does not apply to primer or a coat of primer ontop of previously painted walls. It only applys to freshly painted walls.
